Harnessing 5,000 years of health care knowledge, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) helps to unite and optimize the interrelating functions of the mind, body and spirit. TCM uses a variety of “tools” to assess and treat the body. These include: herbal medicine, acupuncture, tui na (Chinese massage), cupping and gua sha. The World Health Organization recognizes this form of medicine as being safe, reliable and with little to no side effects.

How Does Acupuncture Work?
“Acupuncture is the practice of inserting tiny needles under the skin at specific points in order to stimulate the body’s ability to heal itself.” L. Rohleder
Acupuncture is a physical type of therapy in the TCM toolbox. It is an excellent method of dealing with pain in the body. The points or nodes used in acupuncture treatment are areas of the body with a more dense supply of micro nerves and blood vessels. Stimulating these points sends messages to the brain that can direct the body’s response to injury (lower pain signals, moderate inflammation and increase local blood/nutrient/oxygen flow) and improve healing.
In addition to pain, Acupuncture & TCM can treat a variety of conditions that manifest due to an imbalance in the body. When stressors (such as viruses, poor eating, lack of sleep, emotional distress, lack of exercise or environmental factors) push the body out of balance, symptoms of poor health can manifest. Stimulating points on the body with acupuncture can trigger responses in the brain that affect blood flow, hormone release and nerve impulses to get the body back in balance. Dr. Macintosh will work with you to determine the cause of your symptoms and create a treatment plan that will help you get back to feeling your best.
To help improve circulation, we use a myofascial cupping technique to target the muscles and connective tissue of the body. This enhances the circulation within muscles and body tissue. This treatment is perfect for acute muscle pain and tension, especially injuries of the neck, shoulders, back, as well as herniated discs.
Cupping is also useful for detoxifying, drawing toxins and metabolites toward the skin where they can be flushed away by your lymphatic system. This can bring great relief for those who suffer from influenza, arthritis, asthma, bronchitis and the common cold.
How Does Cupping Work?
Using silicone cups, we create a vacuum on the skin that “draws” the underlying soft tissue up toward the skin, lifting the muscle away from the bone. The cups are used over specific acupuncture points and may be left for 5 to 15 minutes, or moved along the focus area for maximum benefit. The cups may leave a temporary mark on the body. The mark is useful as a diagnostic tool; the darker the mark, the more stagnation is present in the muscles. These marks lightening through successive treatments will signify the underlying condition is improving.
